We’ve all had the problem of which shoes to wear with skirts. In society today, skirts are usually only worn for special occasions (and barely those anymore) or as business suits, etc, so skirts are generally worn with pumps or wedges. But since we choose to be feminine and a wear skirts on a daily basis, not just for special occasions, it brings us to the dilemma: which shoes to wear. Pumps and wedges aren’t very practical for everyday, so what shoes go good with what skirts?
Well let’s first look at a couple of different shoes…
Knee-high boots usually rise just below the knee. Usually made from leather or synthetic material, you can find them in a variety of different material. They have zippers or buckles. Great for cold weather to keep your legs warm.
*If you don’t like boots, you can get tights to keep your legs warm and wear them with flats or loafers.
Loafers or Slip-ons are low, lace-less shoes. The style most commonly seen in American culture has a moccasin construction. They are worn in many situations in a wide variety of colours and designs, often featuring tassels on the front, or metal decorations.
Ballet Flats are similar to a woman’s ballet slipper, but with a very thin heel or the appearance of one. They are usually seen with a small bow, but vary with straps, buckles, and other decorations.
*Flats with ankle length skirts will make your legs appear shorter and heavier.
Flip Flops are a basic footwear similar in a way to sandals. They are just a thin sole with two straps making a Y shape on the sides of the foot, tho some have a strap along the back heel. Flip flops are a simple footwear usually worn in warm weather.
Sandals are an open footwear. Made from a sole held to the foot by strands or thongs passing over the foot. Sandals are casual or formal footwear. Seen in many colors, designs with decor.
Tennis shoes are a full footwear that are canvas and rubber soled. There are different types of tennis shoes: High-tops cover the ankle. Low-tops do not cover the ankle. Mid-cut are in-between high-tops and low-tops. They normally tie, but also come in velcro. They come in loads of colors and styles to choose from.
* When wearing a skirt and tennis shoes, avoid puffy, cross-trainers, and stick with a streamlined classic. Also, stick to denim when wearing tennis as they are the same type of genre of clothing.
So there are some shoe choices, let’s look at some different styles of skirts and then which shoes will go with them.
A-line Skirt is just like the letter A. It’s small and slim at the waist opening bigger as it goes down. The length is usually just below the knee and it great for those with big hips and thighs. The shape of the A-line won’t allow the skirt to cling to the part you want to hide.
Pencil Skirt is for everybody, but perfect for those curvy figures since it is tapered at the bottom. The length is to the knees and works for long and short waists.
*For knee length skirts, go with knee high boots in cooler weather. Brown and black are especially good colors for this look. In warmer weather when wearing knee length skirts, go with flats, flip flops, or tennis shoes.
Tube Skirt is similar to the pencil skirt, but goes all the way to the ankles. Great skirt for those with curves, petite, and those who have wider tops and smaller bottoms.
Column Skirt style is great for lengthening the body and works best for the tall and leggy. Those that are rounded and those with narrow hips can work this style. It will hide big ankles and calves because this skirt falls at the ankle or below it.
*For ankle length skirts, wear loafers, flip flops, sandals or boots.
Asymmetrical Skirt has uneven hemlines that are longer on the sides, creating a line and curve with the angles of the body. The Asymmetrical style hides part of the legs and heavy thighs. The fit is not too tight and not too loose
*For calf length skirts, try loafers, flats, sandals, or flip flops.
Other things to know about shoes and skirts:
*When you wear khaki skirts, avoid wearing white shoes… go for a dark color like brown or black.
*Balance the weight of your garment with that of your shoes. Lightweight fabrics like silk and linen are best accessorized with lightweight leather and microfiber shoes. Heavier shoes will balance thicker skirts.
*Keep the same genre of shoes to your clothes. Don’t wear tennis shoes with a nice formal skirt and don’t wear formal shoes with an everyday skirt.
Hopefully this will help you know which shoes will be the finishing touch on your “perfect” outfit!

Amanda, thank you for this information. I wear tenny shoes at home with my skirts. We’ve been doing the 7 day challenge and it’s going great.
We love it. I appreciate you and your family very much.
Thank you. Also, I read an article by Blessed Femina where she recently compiled a list of stores carrying feminine apparel. I believe you know her blog. If not, she can be found on mine.
God bless,
xox

Thanks for the tips, Amanda! I usually wear ballet shoes or clogs, or if I’m “roughing it”, aka going out and hiking or something, I wear sneakers. Around the house I wear just socks, barefoot, or slippers.
God bless,

Haha good post. I am ALL ballet flats and boots!
And of course I do flip flops 100% of the time in the summer
Oh and of course I have to have my Vans slip-ons and my laceless Rocket Dogs.
I USED to wear (like when I as 12 and just starting to wear skirts and was extremely skater-girl)… A pair of chunky DC’s or a pair of Vans with checkered laces with a long denim maxi skirt. That was me. WAS . . . me.

Hi Amanda, thank you so much for this post! I was going to write you a comment on facebook, but I figure this is just as good of a place. I have been doing a lot of praying as of late, and the Lord has been directing me to make major changes in certain aspects of my life. I need to stop trying to fit in with the world so much. One area the Lord has really shown me is in the area of dress. I have always hated pants, but I thought they were more versatile than skirts. The Lord has been laying it on my heart that that is not true, and skirts/dress are so much more feminine, and beautiful. I have decided that if that is His will for me, then I will obey. While I can’t just do a total overhaul to my wardrobe, I can start making changes now. I am working to make sure everything I wear is modest and feminine. Thank you for the inspiration, and allowing the Lord to work through you!

Thanks for the tips.
I do need a pair of ballet flats to wear with my skirts when I begin to teach! Pumps will definitely not be practical for chasing down children!
Blessings,
Jessica

Lol, shoes are one part of my “style” that I pretty much totally neglect. I don’t like them. I love going barefoot.
Besides riding boots, I’ve got a pair of running shoes and flats. And guess what the flats are. Athletic flats. Uh huh.
But I like the article.
Great tips!

haha.. great post, Amanda!!!
I like them!! With the below the knee skirts, I used to wear the ballet flats. With the ankle length skirts I think it’s cool to wear sandals. I also like the boots, but here at my city the weather is always hot! =/
Shoes usually are a problem!! hehe..
As Alyssa, I’m also ALL BALLET FLATS!!! ^^ Aww… They are so cute!! I think they are very feminine and modest too!! I love them! (But I also like sandals and flip flots, although I don’t use it a lot! =P).
About the skirts, I usually wear A-line (it seems my name!! lol), Column and Asymmetrical skirts!!
God bless you, dear!

I usually go for flats too! they are easy and comfortable and go with just about everything I have! I’ll be glad when its warm again, so I can wear them.
I wear my knee high boots in the winter cause they keep my legs warm and see to go better with the season.

Yeah, boots are the best thing, too (of course, besides ballet flats). Hey if you have a Parisian near, you, they have really really nice ones for a decent price. Mine are suede and leather and have puffy fuzz on top. I got them for $49 on Black Friday
Oh and for ballet flats everyone == check out Journey’s or Shii. I got two pairs there for $10 each!!
