My heart is heavy. My dear 90yo great grandpa fell multiple times last month with the last fall putting him in the hospital and then a nursing home.
He also has cancer and other health problems.
We went up to see him yesterday and when we got to his room I was sure we were at the wrong room because I did not recognize him and when I saw his name tag on the door, my heart sank! He has changed so much since I saw him last and I’m just so sad. He is on medication that has done this to him… not only has it changed him physically, but the meds make him hallucinate and he has said some pretty horrible things that he thinks has happened! We didn’t end up getting to see him because he was out cold sleeping, but it might have been for the better right now.
It just breaks my heart because my Grandpa has such a special place in my heart. After I completed his armed service album for him, and we talked about his harrowing experiences, he and I became very close. I am glad to know tho that he knows Jesus but its just so hard to see him the way he is and I really am so heartbroken by what is happening.
Please pray for us as we go through this difficult time and also for clear direction on being able to help them. Since Grandpa is in the nursing home, Grandma is at home all my herself. She doesn’t want to bring him home because she cannot take care of him if something happens and she doesn’t want to feel helpless. So if he stays at a nursing home, she will be alone. We don’t want him to stay in the nursing home on all those drugs that aren’t helping. We already lost a Great Grandma from mistreatment at a nursing home and we don’t want that to happen again.
We are trying to figure out how we can help them whether its having them come to our house or having one of us girls stay with Grandma.
We all are just so sad by this and could really use your prayers.

That’s pretty tough. I hope you’re able to cherish the times you still have with him. And the most important thing is that he knows the Lord. In that at least you can rejoice.

Talk about a rock and a hard spot In the nursing home he can get all the most advanced but completely invasive medical care. Keep your spirits up and don’t let it get to you too much. Your love means the most of anything to you grandpa, love never dies.

It’s so hard when these things happen in families, but at the same time it’s encouraging knowing you have each other and to know that God designed us to have families so we won’t go through these hard times alone.

Sorry to hear that Miss A. I know how tough that can be. We went through things with my grandparents a number of years ago. Fortunately, we know that God is ultimately in control and we can trust Him. Will be praying for you and your family, sweetie!

I completely understand your feelings, my family is going through a similar situation with our grandma. She fell from the stairs a few times, she suffered deppression and she was taking a cocktail of medicines (for deppression combined with her other third age health issues) that affected her mental health deeply. She needs care 24/7 but won’t allow a nurse to take care of her or any strange person in her house.
She has 5 kids and only 2 of them are taking care of her. One of which lives outside the country (my mother) and has to travel back and forth to take care of her.
So I can completely understand your feelings. It’s very hard to see your grandparent evolve into this other person you hardly know. It’s frustrating to see them deteriorate each day and miss their strong spirit and comforting eyes. It’s very sad, but God gives us the strength we need to keep on going and the wisdom we need to make the best decisions for our loved ones’ wellbeing. Will pray for you, your grandpa and family.

I will be praying. We had a time our family was helping take care of a great grandpa during his last few months. It was difficult, but it was a much better environment than a nursing home would have been.
Blessings,

I am so sorry to hear that, I know it’s hard.
This spring my great-grandpa passed away, his situation had been similar, although he had Alzheimer’s.
It was really sad, he wasn’t very aware of his surroundings and sometimes didn’t even recognize my great-grandma.
I hope your grandma lives near you, because I know she will get lonely.
It is a blessing that my family lives close to each other, because my great-grandma doesn’t like being by herself all the time.
She wanted to bring my g-g’pa home, though, which wasn’t realistically possible.
I’ll be praying,
4Him,
~Hannah
