On Moi’s 2009 Book List

Published in Being A Homeschool College Student, Book and Literature Articles, Homeschooling Articles, Super Favorites

When I was Making A List of goals for 2009, I realized I needed to make a new book list to start reading too.
I kept track of all the books I read in 2008, and was soo proud of myself when I read the stats of my reading…
In 2008 I read:

Kingdom Series by Chuck Black pg. 943
Persuasion by Jane Austen pg. 188
The Inheritance by Christoph von Schmid pg. 182
Ishmael by E.D.E.N. Southworth pg. 523
Self-Raised by E.D.E.N. Southworth pg. 374
Helen’s Temper by Mrs. George Gladstone pg. 123
Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne pg. 256
Run Baby Run by Nicky Cruz pg.360
The Infinite Day by Chris Walley pg. 571
Rosa of Linden Castle by Christoph von Schmid pg. 156
Michael O’Halloran by Gene Stratton Porter pg. 576
Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss pg. 341
Her Father’s Daughter by Gene Stratton Porter pg. 328
The Cross and The Switchblade by David Wilkerson pg. 192
Enoch Roden’s Training by Hesba Stretton pg. 184

WOW! 20 books and 5,297 pages! I am actually pretty excited about how many books I read this year! Its pretty exciting to see my accomplishment!

So right now I am currently reading:

My *NEW* Reese Chronological Bible
Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
The Love Dare by Stephen and Alex Kendrick

And next I will be reading (not in any particular order):

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte
Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger
For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
The Count Of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Silas Marner by George Eliot
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

I am sure I will be adding as the year progresses and I find more books! :)

Reading is such a wonderful way to educate! I must give credit to my love of reading for a lot of what I know. I learned many words from reading classics, I learned a lot of history from reading classics, and so much more! Reading Literature is an amazing way to homeschool! I plan to incorporate it a lot when I homeschool my children.

So… what books have you read this year? What was your statistics? Have you started a 2009 list yet? I would love to know what you are reading and maybe even find some to add to my list!
Love, Prayers and Blessings,

Thanks for stopping by “Daily” at the “Planet”!!

Wow, you read some pretty awful books! I couldn’t ever stand Austen or Bronte.

I’m curious, what’s your purpose for reading Salinger?

I’m officially embarked on a quest to read Calvin’s Institutes in a year. We’ll see how that goes. Other than that, I’ve got Intermediate Accounting 2 (Now, for smarter people!), Legal Environmment of Business, Contemporary Marketing…..You get the picture.

I also never got interested in Stepping Heavenward… :)

Yeah, Jeremy… I can’t stand the Brontes, but I just watched Wuthering Heights on Masterpiece, so I thought I would read it just to see if they followed the book!
As for Austen… LOVE her novels!

I want to read Salinger because its a classic.

And I got an accounting book I am reading too, but since its not literature, I didn’t put it on the list! :P

Wuthering Heights is good, not as good as jane eyre, I would recommend that more.

Sense and sensibility is very good, I got partway through northanger abbey before my mom saw the movie and wanted to check it out before I read further. I will warn you, Grapes of Wrath has some nasty language, I started to read it with my mom for literature, and she wanted me to stop it, just so you are warned. =)

Hope you can get all the reading you want to done!

    Luv,
    Miss Kitty

Hehe, I just did a post like this, kind of. Hurrah for reading classics! I agree, it is the best way to educate! I do a lot of that as you know. ;)

How was the Masterpiece Wuthering Heights? I saw the old one, it’s not bad. I loved the book!

I have read most of the books on your list for 2009–I’m planning on reading Nicholas Nikleby soon! I bought it at the library for a quarter so I need to get on that.

Let me know how you like Catcher in the Rye. I’m kind of afraid of that…I want someone to tell me if I should read it. I don’t know if it is any good or not–don’t know many people who’ve read it.

  6. Jeremy Says:

Well, as someone else has seen fit to warn you, I’ll throw in my two cents…

The reason I asked about Salinger is because, although I’ve never read the book, I’ve read the cliffnotes, and that was more than enough. The book is the story of a teenage boy’s “troubled life”, and most of the book is concerned with his visits with loose ladies and other like encounters. My Mom started reading it awhile back, and she got through the first chapter before pitching it, and said she’d never read a book where the F and B words were used so freely.

    I’ll get off my soapbox now…. :)

Ooh, Les Miserables…that book is the size of a brick, but it’s brilliant. :D Hope you like it! A Tale of Two Cities and Northanger Abbey are good too.

What did you think of the MT Wuthering Heights? I’ve heard mixed reviews for that one…

Aww…I loved Wuthering Heights, so I hope you enjoy it! I’m planning to reread Stepping Heavenward at some point because it was excellent.

Let’s see…I’ve got a list a mile long for this year, including classics that my freshman English teacher recommended for anyone planning to go onto college. At the time, I ignored the list, but looking back on my just-finished college days as an *English major*…they would have been helpful.

You’ve got an excellent list on your hands; hope you’re as excited about diving in as I am! :)

    Hello Amanda!

Your “books read” list looks like it could be my list! Except for Jane Austen–I tried reading “Pride and Prejudice” a while ago and couldn’t get interested : D Hmmm… this book list idea sounds fun–mind if I copy?!

Thanks for your comments! Your are right about all the extra blogging–we all have been having ideas of things to blog about and seem to be doing it all at once : D

That must have been funny/frustrating to be stopped that many times! Did you know that Cassia found out that the big van also has an expired license plate?! She didn’t give us a ticket though : D Wasn’t she nice?!

Oh, hon, reading is like breathing for me. Seriously, if I wrote down all the books I have read this month…;-)

Actually, just starting to take time for pleasure reading…been reading mostly for research for my next book…fun! Really, I enjoy research so sometimes it’s the most fun part about writing. ;-)

Austen…love all the movies..read through S&S and it was ok…P&P I’m getting myself through…;-) But Dickens is the MOST AWESOME author out there. A Tale of Two Cities is my faaaave. A good film adaption, if you haven’t seen it, is the 1989 version starring Chris Sarandon.

And I haven’t read Count of Monte Cristo yet, but I love the version with Richard Chamberlain. I’ll have to look the book up. :-)

  17. Rebekah Says:

I love Jane Austen and Charles Dickens! Mansfield Park is my favorite Jane Austen – I love Fanny! If you have ever seen the movie “Northanger Abbey”, do not let it influence your decision about reading the book – the book is nothing like the movie (which I thought was horrible). The book is wonderful! I read it to my sisters in 2008.

Right now the only books I really have “planned” are the Faith and Freedom series by Douglas Bond, In His Steps and any books by G. A. Henty that are set in the United States of America. I am reading them aloud to my sisters. It is really fun and the books are really good. I might read some of the Love Comes Softly books this year – we will see.

In the summer when we study Europe I would like to read Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Have you ever read that?

    I had better go!

To the KING be all the glory!

    Rebekah

    By the way,
    I forgot to say…

A very long time ago you wrote about how much you loved Stepping Heavenward. I was NOT interested in that book. It sounded so boring! After reading what you said about it though, I was a little interested. Then, more recently, Mom said I should read it – she knows what kind of books I like and thought I would love it. This last year I finally read it – it is one of the best books I have ever read! Definitely for older girls in my opinion though, not younger ones. I recently bought my own copy from Lamplighter for my Hopechest!

    Just wanted to share!

Wow, you did read a lot of books, Im hoping to read a good amount this year also ;) I’m half way through Emma By Jane Austen and I’m going to read Pride and Prejudice and maybe Sense and Sensibility ;)
I own Stepping Heavenward- I got half way through the lost interest because I was only 13 when i read it. So maybe when I get older it might be more interesting :)

    Amanda,

Oh, this takes me back many years to when I read for pleasure. I just had to check out your list. I loved The Three Musketeers and the Count of Monte Cristo. And I loved Wuthering Heights; I think I’ve read it more than once! I started Silas Marner, but I think it was too depressing!

    Be blessed,

  23. Heather Says:

Oooh, lot’s of Jane Austen coming up! I’ve only read P & P so far…

Are you going to read the unabridged Les Mis?

The Count of Monte Cristo, I’d like to read that. I’m reading The Three Musketeers (though mine is titled The Three Guardsmen for some reason. Same book though.) but I think I need an annotated version. He’s a GREAT writer, but there’s lot’s of stuff I don’t understand, which is frusturating.

I LOOOOVE the Silas Marner story! But I’ve never read the book. :P I’ve heard the audio drama from Focus on the Family. (They do a FANTASTIC job on their radio dramas!) I really want to read it some day, it’s just that I’ve got a gajillion books on my mental to read list.

You know, I like working with books and I hate working with books. I’ll be working steadily when SUDDENLY a title or cover catches my eye and the next thing you know… I’m not getting any work done. :( :D

I know a few others have warned you as well, but I thought I’d do the same. :P
I started reading Grapes of Wrath when I was in Christian school last year. I only got part way through the book before telling my teacher I couldn’t stomach it anymore. What I hadn’t marked out for being curse words, needed to be marked out for their oversexualized message.
Just thought I’d let you know, though it looks like plenty of others have got your back ;D
