Hi there! I want to invite you to come with me as I go to the the Ice
Cream Parlor on this hot and muggy day in July in the state of Indiana.
I chose this week’s Carnival of Homeschooling theme because it
has been really warm lately and ice cream is a great way to cool down. I went to the store on Sunday and after looking through the enormous amount of ice cream flavors, came home with the ones you will see featured in this week’s carnival.
So grab your favorite ice cream treat and come with me to the Ice Cream Parlor as we read some of homeschooling’s best bloggers.
Cristina who runs Home Spun Juggling has a life lesson from watching bumblebees as they were “Bumbling through the Garden”.
Dana Wilson of Epi Kardia Home Education has “12 Surefire Ways to Prepare Your Middle schoolers for High School”. These 12 great tips for using those middle school years to prepare for the years that really count — high school!
Alvaro Fernandez of the Brain Fitness Blog has some reflections by an educator and blogger on the “10 Brain Training Tips To Teach and Learn”.
Tammy with Just Enough, and Nothing More says “Even Unschoolers Can Get Homeschool Burnout”. Burnout can happen to anyone. It snuck up on me, and I thought I was having fun. How do you beat homeschool or unschool stress? Discover 5 homeschooling secrets!
::Suzanne:: who has “::adventures in daily living::” has some writing & gardening. She knows that writing instruction is about error correction in the same way that gardening is about weeding.
Janice Campbell who is Taking Time For Things That Matter thinks that “Everyone Knows Shakespeare- Or Do They?”
There’s a lot more to Shakespeare than Juliet’s balcony scene. You can learn a simple four-step process that makes it fun to study and understand one of the greatest writers of all time.
The Life Without School Blog asks “What is Success?”. Then she asks that you “Help us create this page called Successful”.
Fiona King who has some Teaching Tips has a nice list of “25 Teachers Who Drastically Changed the World”. Theresa L. Twogood who runs the OLIN e-Book e-Publishing has the “Final Free Christian Advertising Press Release”. Both as an entry and for your information.
MBB of Money Blue Book: Personal Finance Blog has an updated list of why “College Students Should Apply For Student Credit Cards”.
christinemoers who says, welcome to my brain has “Dinner!!” Don’t let the craziness of summer screw up your family time. Did you know that family meals are really, really GOOD for your kids?
Henry of Why Homeschool found some “Interesting statistics from Google’s search engine” He thought it funny that the ratio of Google hits for school to homeschool is about the same ratio as the number of children in public schools v. those being homeschooling.
Shez who has Homeschooled twins has a “Sporting spirit” this week . The ancient Greek olympians were vastly different from modern ones. The ancient olympians were highly competitive, professional sportsmen. Modern-day ‘Ultimate Fighting’ resembles the Greek’s pankration, where almost everything short of eye-gouging and biting was permitted. “If it weren’t for the nudity, the ancient games would have played well on modern TV,” Lee says. The ancient Greeks played the games under a flag of truce to give athletes safe passage. The games offered a respite from war, according to Lee. The athletes ran the final race of the Olympiad in armor, perhaps to acknowledge the coming end of the truce.
piseco who pays Mind Games recently read Farley Mowat’s book “Owls in the Family” this week – and now we’re looking for suggestions for similar books!
Kathy who does the Homeschoolbuzz.com Reviews gives a review of the classic book, “The Story of Doctor Doolittle”. It is a great family read-a-loud.
The Reluctant Homeschooler has some “Wild Foods” for you to try. She said, “Who knew that I could eat the daylilies in my front yard? Or the milkweed?! That’s what Larissa recently told me after she picked up a book on edible wild plants. Summer may be here, but the learning never ends – not even for us adults. So we’ve been sampling our wildflowers – not in vases, but on our dinner plates!”
Jayne of Our Great Southern Land has the “Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge – Almost Finished!
Kim who Works in Progress has a wonderful list of reasons to “Encouraging Children to Journal”.
denise who does Frugal Homeschooling is now able to “Talk like an Alien — Latin, Anyone?”. If you have been wanting to study Latin, here are three online resources to guide you.
Alasandra who runs Alasandra’s Homeschool Blog Awards begs the question: “Sean Paddock and Tyler McMillan weren’t even homeschoolers, so why are their deaths being used to harass homeschoolers?” She doesn’t understand when a public school student dies at the hands of a parent no one suggest they should increase the oversight of public schools, so why do they use these tragedies to harass legitimate homeschoolers? Why did they rush to the conclusion that these children were homeschoolers when one was to young for kindergarten and the other attended a private school?
Rose who is Learning at Home just found out what happens when government policy determines education policy for your children. You end up with special interest groups that start proposing “compulsory sex ed for 4-year-olds”.
Tea Party Girl says that “When I Relax, I Feel Guilty”. But she wants to know your opinion too: When you relax, do you feel guilty? How much time alone do you need? For those of you whose children are grown, please share your perspectives with those of us in the thick of family managing.
Heather Johnson who has a radio free school has a “Guest Post; A Different School of Thought” with another way to think.
denise who says Let’s play math! answers the question: How shall we teach addition and multiplication? With two little words: “and” and “of.” Her article, “If It Ain?t Repeated Addition, What is It?” has sparked a long discussion.
Katherine who is teaching that there is No fighting, no biting! read a Newsweek article about a New York mom who let her 9 year old ride the subway alone. It got her wondering about what kind of mom she is and how this affects her children. Her wondering brought her to this conclusion: “helicopter vs free range moms”.
suburbancorrespondent who has The More, The Messier says, “We’re All Patient, So Shut Up Already…”. Apparently, if you are a homeschool mama, you are patient… see what the big discussion is about.
Heather, Sprittibee, shares a Homeschool Mom’s Devotional for anyone who has felt the pressure of having the perfect homeschool, fitting into the right mold, or the perfect curriculum and how sometimes you just have to have that feeling “Being Broken”, especially those of us who aren’t perfect.
Dawn Adams who has Day by Day Discoveries asks “Are You a Trained Teacher AND a Homeschooler?” because there is a lot of debate about whether a homeschool parent has to have certification or not.
Rocky Road
My favorite! It is rich and creamy, and filled with little surprises!
Jacque who is Walking Therein shares her answers to questions she found about curriculum choices, and “How Do You Teach and Organize a Large Family?” when you have toddlers.
Barbara Frank has a well-known homesteading, homeschooling artist mom passes away at the age of 92. That woman was known as “Tasha Tudor, Former Homeschool Mom”.
Katrina Cain who asks Were You Wondering… tells “What is the Difference Between North and South?”. Her article took her to places that she hadn’t considered, maybe it will take you there too.
Elena LaVictoire who goes to My Domestic Church has a review of the “HBO’s Series on John Adams” and how it affected her homeschool family.
Elisheva Levin who does Ragamuffin Studies has a “Declaration! The Pursuit of Happiness”.
This year at Los Pecos Homeschool we have studied the founding documents of the United States as part of our Civics study. Also, every year on Independence Day, we read the Declaration. This year, to honor the 4th of July, I have distilled from our conversations our thoughts about three important ideas found in Declaration. For each, I have also discussed our thoughts about preserving our liberties. Here is the last of three posts in honor of the 232nd anniversary of American Independence.
Carletta who is Successful Homeschooling has “A Lesson from Frog and Toad” for you! Traditional schools cause children to stop pursuing knowledge and start looking for cues from others as to what they should and shouldn’t say.
I hope you enjoyed going to the Parlor with me! That was so good! Thank you to everyone who submitted an article! You are what make this carnival Great!
If you enjoyed this week’s carnival, be sure to leave a comment and let me know! I love hearing feedback from my readers!
You can also grab the icon at the top to announce this week’s carnival on your blog!
Be sure to submit an article for next weeks carnival that is being hosted at Red Sea School.
Love, Prayers and Blessings,

Thanks for stopping by “Daily” at the “Planet”!!

So, how would you submit an article for the homeschool carnival, and when?
(Jake pointed something out to me. Every time I visit your blog on this computer, the “blogger’s community” signs me in as him. So Nick and I are helping him be a top visiter.
)
Gotta go now,

[...] In other, less weird, but more fun news, Amanda is hosting the Carnival of Homeschooling this week. And, it seems that having her host it is the only way I can remember to get an article into it! Her theme is so cute: Ice Cream Parlour. She had asked and asked if Jocelyn and I had any ideas, and when I said ‘ice cream stand’, she said she had already thought about that. She made her own graphics, and it turned out pretty cute. There are some really interesting articles in it (as usual) this week, too that you should peruse. Each weekly issue of the COH really is a good resource for all different types of info: Homeschooling encouragement, curriculum information, planning, links, news resources and opinions. So, Let’s Go To The Ice Cream Parlour! [...]
